Global Surgical Initiatives – Kyabirwa Surgical Center On-Site Placement Programs Policy

Policy Overview

This policy establishes the framework for hosting external learners, volunteers, and visitors at Kyabirwa Surgical Center (KSC). Our goal is to provide meaningful educational experiences while ensuring that patient safety, staff welfare, and operational excellence remain our top priorities. All placements are subject to available capacity and workspace limitations. KSC reserves the right to adjust or decline requests to maintain the quality of our services and the learning environment.

Capacity and Duration

Maximum Capacity per Shift
 

To ensure safe and effective supervision, we limit the number of learners on-site:

  • Clinical Areas: Maximum of 3 learners (Surgery, Nursing, Anesthesia, Lab, Radiography, Pharmacy, Gyn).

  • Non-Clinical Areas: Maximum of 2 learners (Social Work, IT, Admin, Bio-Med Engineering).

  • Total Facility Limit: 5 learners per shift.

Duration

The standard placement is a maximum of one month. Extensions are not guaranteed and require formal review and approval by management.

Placement Allocation

Placements are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Bookings must be confirmed at least one month prior to the proposed start date.

Welfare and Logistics

Welfare and Logistics:

Participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodation and transportation to and from the center; however, on-site hostel accommodation may be available at a standard fee. Transportation options include private vehicles, taxis, boda bodas, or public transport operating along the center’s main access routes, with all related costs borne by the participant. To streamline facility operations, breakfast and lunch are provided under the KSC welfare protocol, with a compulsory meal fee of UGX 10,000 per day payable to the Accounts Department upon arrival; any meal fee waivers are granted solely at the discretion of management.

Requirements by Category

Internship: Official internship letter from a recognized institution and a valid Student ID.

Volunteer: Academic or provisional transcript and a recommendation letter.

Shadowing/Facility Training: Updated CV and relevant academic documents.

Benchmarking: Official request letter from the parent organization, a clear agenda, and a list of participants.

Graduate Trainee Program

This program is designed for fresh graduates with exceptional potential whom KSC seeks to mentor and develop through structured exposure and guidance. Positions are advertised as needs arise, though candidates may also be referred by trusted partners, and all applicants are required to successfully pass a formal interview process.

 

To be eligible, candidates must have graduated within the last two years and is well aligned with KSC’s values. Placement is determined by departmental requirements, whereas specific terms such as duration and remuneration are negotiated at the offer stage.
